Class Descriptions

Class groups entire year

These are only available when there are sufficient numbers of students from the same school who attend together.
Class duration: 90 minutes
Option to add on writing class at discounted rate

From January 2018

Given the large number of texts at Year 12 English and the different order in which schools choose to assess the SACs, Year 12 students need to take both a“Core class” and a “writing /SAC class.
One Unit 3 text will be used for the Creative SAC and this will be covered in the writing class.
It is not necessary to study the text chosen for the creative SAC in as great a depth as the text for the analytical SAC.

If none of a student’s texts are nominated, then the student should choose the “core class” where language analysis and targeted work on the student’s selected text can be given.

Students must book for the 2 hours in term 1 and they have the option of continuing this into term 2.

Time commitment

For students in a school group: 90 minutes per week with an option of 60 minutes of
writing skills each term.
For students in text classes:
Term 1: 120 minutes per week (one text class, one writing class)
Term 2: 120 or 60 minutes per week (option of continuing 60 minutes of writing skills).

Text classes / language analysis

These classes will focus on the nominated set text and primarily upon the skills required for analytical essay writing for the SAC and the end-of-year exam. The classes will run across Unit 3 and therefore will also include language analysis.
Class duration: 60 minutes

Essay writing and SAC class

For students who are not in a school group, these classes are compulsory for term 1. They may then have the option of continuing for term 2.

The dedicated writing classes will be focused on the skills required to achieve fluency and sophistication in writing. They will also assist students with:

  • structuring sentences, paragraphs and essays
  • language choices for formal writing and strategies to vary sentences
  • vocabulary
  • grammar
  • The creative SAC
  • The oral SAC

Class duration: 60 minutes

Most writing classes can be taken adjacent to the student’s core class, depending upon availability. There are also alternative time slots available.

Workshops will be offered from time to time depending upon student needs and will focus on both texts and writing skills. These will be advertised through Excelsior and on the website.

Students will study their comparative pairing of texts and language analysis in the one 90 minute class. The timetable will change.
The option of taking an extra one hour essay writing skills class will be offered in Unit 4.

Comparative text classes

These classes will study in depth the paired texts and focus on the skills of essay writing for comparison. The classes will prepare students for both the SAC in Unit 4 and the end-of-year exam. As this is the core class for Unit 4, students will also revise language analysis for the exam.

Class duration: 90 minutes
