Years 7 and 8
The year 7- 8 classes are focused on the improving the skills required prepare the students for English at higher levels
The Australian English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of language, literature and literacy. Our teaching and learning programme aims to balance and integrate all three strands. Together, the strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating. Learning in English builds on concepts, skills and processes developed in earlier years, and teachers will revisit and strengthen these as needed.
Students will engage with a variety of texts. They will be taught to interpret, create, evaluate and discuss a wide range of literary texts. These include various types of media texts, including newspapers, film and digital texts, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, dramatic performances and multimodal texts, with themes and issues involving levels of abstraction, higher order reasoning and intertextual references. Students develop a critical understanding of the contemporary media and the differences between media texts.
Students will also be asked to create a range of imaginative, informative and persuasive types of texts including narratives, discussions, literary analyses and transformations of texts.
Years 9 and 10: Preparation for VCE
Our Preparation for VCE course aims to give students the best possible grounding in English skills to prepare them for work at VCE level. All of our classes for Years address the English curriculum as set by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and closely relate these skills to those required in the VCE. Classes will cover all of the skills required for VCE English, including: language analysis, presenting a point of view, the creative response, the comparative essay and the oral responses.
Australian schools have the flexibility to interpret the ACARA guidelines to best suit their own schools, teachers and students and therefore there is much individual variation between schools. There are no common set texts or even writing tasks. Given this, Excelsior classes focus on the skills needed to best equip students to cope with the demands of VCE.
